Foods that lower cholesterol

Heart problems are one of the major diseases growing these days and the main reason behind this is a sedentary lifestyle, lack of exercise and unhealthy eating habits. If we talk about cholesterol, there are two types of cholesterol: good cholesterol which is known as HDL and bad cholesterol which is known as LDL. Now we should be aware of what we are eating. If we eat right and do exercise then, we can keep the cholesterol problem away. So let us check out the foods that lower cholesterol.

  1. Legumes:

These are high fiber foods which include pulses, beans and lentils. Legumes are rich in fiber, proteins and minerals. It is recommended that daily 1 to 2 cups of legumes you should include in your diet to keep you healthy. It helps in lowering the bad cholesterol i.e. LDL and keeping your heart healthy. Legumes also help in maintaining weight as they have low calories, but rich in nutrition value.

  1. Avocados:

Avocados are among the best fruits you can eat to control the cholesterol level. They are rich in monounsaturated fats and fibre and these two things are helpful in decreasing the level of bad cholesterol and increasing good cholesterol. Apart from this, this fruit also helps in reducing the skin aging.

  1. Nuts:

Make nuts your best friend as they are rich in good fats. They contain phytosterols which are similar to cholesterol and stop the absorption of bad cholesterol in the intestine. Almonds and walnuts are rich in monounsaturated fatty acids and omega-3 which is good for heart health. It is advisable to eat a handful of nuts daily as this is one of the foods that lower cholesterol.

  1. Fatty fish:

Fish which are fatty are rich in Omega-3 fatty acids which helps in lowering the bad cholesterol and keeps the heart healthy by reducing the chances of strokes. Mackerel and salmon fishes are best. You can eat fried fish, but the recommended way for healthy cooking is steaming and stewing. Fish helps in making skin glow and hair shine.

  1. Whole grains:

Whole grains like oats and barley are good for heart health as they contain beta glucan which helps in raising good cholesterol and keeps the heart healthy. Whole grains provide more fibre, vitamins and minerals in comparison to refined grains.
